Start with ownership and updates

Protect administration
Change default administrator credentials and use a unique password. Keep the management page available only from the local network unless remote access is essential. Prefer HTTPS administration, sign out after changes and avoid managing the router from public Wi-Fi.
Review internet exposure
Inspect port forwarding, DMZ settings, UPnP and remote-management options. Remove mappings you cannot explain. A DMZ host can receive broad unsolicited traffic and should not be used as a quick fix for a game or camera that fails to connect.
Separate devices thoughtfully
A guest network can keep visitors and less-trusted smart devices away from work computers and storage. Isolation features vary, so verify that guests cannot reach the router's management page or private devices. Segmentation supports, rather than replaces, updates and strong passwords.
