A laptop can show one address in its network settings while an IP website displays another. Nothing is broken. The first usually identifies the device inside a local network; the second identifies the connection as it reaches the public internet.
Private addresses stay local
Home and office networks use reserved IPv4 ranges such as 10.0.0.0/8 and 192.168.0.0/16. Routers do not forward these addresses across the public internet. Different homes can therefore reuse the same private address without conflicting with each other.
The router translates traffic
Network Address Translation records which internal device started each connection and maps it to the public address. Replies return to the router, which sends them to the correct phone, computer or television. This sharing is normal and is not itself a security guarantee.
Public does not mean personally published
A public IP is reachable in internet routing, but a home firewall generally rejects unexpected inbound connections. Websites see the public source address because replies need somewhere to go. They do not automatically receive the private address shown in your Wi-Fi settings.
When the distinction matters
Remote access, game hosting and some voice applications can require inbound connectivity or port forwarding. Troubleshooting works better when you first identify whether a problem concerns the device's private address, the router's public address or an additional carrier-grade NAT layer.
Practical checklist
- Use the router page to identify the local gateway.
- Use an IP checker to see the public address.
- Never publish router login credentials with either address.
- Remove port-forwarding rules that are no longer needed.
Keep the result in context
Network tools provide useful evidence, not a complete identity or security verdict. Record what you tested, compare results before and after a change, and use several independent signals when a decision matters.
