Both proxies and VPNs can make a website see a different source IP, but they operate at different layers. A proxy usually handles traffic from one configured application. A VPN typically creates a network interface that can carry traffic for the whole device.
Application-level proxies
HTTP and SOCKS proxies receive requests from software configured to use them. They are useful for testing, filtering and routing selected applications. Other programs continue to connect normally unless they are configured separately, and encryption depends on the application protocol.
Device-level tunnels
A VPN client routes selected or all device traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a VPN server. This can protect traffic on an untrusted local network and cover applications that support ordinary networking. Split-tunnel rules may deliberately exclude some destinations or programs.
Trust and visibility
The intermediary handling traffic becomes a party you must evaluate. It can see connection metadata and may see unencrypted content. Free services still need a business model. Prefer providers with clear ownership, current protocols, honest retention explanations and responsive security practices.
Choose by scope
Use a proxy when one browser or tool needs a controlled route and you understand the application's encryption. Use a VPN when the device needs broader network protection or remote access. Neither option removes cookies, account identifiers, malware or unsafe decisions.
Practical checklist
- List which applications must use the alternate route.
- Confirm whether DNS follows the same path.
- Read the provider's retention and ownership information.
- Verify the visible IP before and after connecting.

Network tools provide useful evidence, not a complete identity or security verdict. Record what you tested, compare results before and after a change, and use several independent signals when a decision matters.
