Choosing a multifactor authentication method

Compare security keys, authenticator apps, push prompts and SMS so stronger account protection remains usable.

Multifactor authentication adds proof beyond a password. Methods differ substantially in resistance to phishing, account recovery and convenience. The best available option is one you can use consistently without creating an unrecoverable account.

Security keys and passkeys

FIDO security keys and passkeys bind authentication to the legitimate website, making them highly resistant to phishing. Register more than one key or device where possible. Confirm how the service handles recovery before removing older methods.

Authenticator codes

Time-based codes from an authenticator app work offline and avoid mobile-network attacks. They can still be entered into a fake site in real time. Protect the phone, back up seeds only through a trusted method and keep recovery codes separate.

Push prompts and fatigue

Push approval is convenient, but repeated unexpected prompts can pressure a user into accepting. Read the location or number challenge, deny requests you did not initiate and change the password if prompts continue. Number matching is safer than a simple approve button.

SMS as a useful fallback

SMS is weaker because phone numbers can be transferred or messages intercepted, yet it is usually better than password-only access. Use a stronger method for email, finance and administrator accounts when offered, and add a carrier account PIN to reduce SIM-swap risk.

Practical checklist

  • Prefer passkeys or security keys for critical accounts.
  • Register a backup method before you need it.
  • Never approve a push you did not initiate.
  • Store recovery codes somewhere separate from the phone.

Keep the result in context

Network tools provide useful evidence, not a complete identity or security verdict. Record what you tested, compare results before and after a change, and use several independent signals when a decision matters.
